Amsterdam Museum

In the heart of Amsterdam, between Kalverstraat and Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, you will find the Amsterdam Museum. The museum focuses on the past, present and future of Amsterdam. As an Amsterdam-based translation agency we feel hugely privileged to provide English translations for this wonderful museum.

Corona in the city
One of the exhibitions that we have worked on is ‘Corona in the city’. This is a digital exhibition in which residents of Amsterdam share their experiences of the lockdown through photos, poems, videos or diaries. For the digital room of the exhibition, we translated several art projects into English. Examples include the projects ‘Black Lives Matter’, a piece about the demonstrations in Amsterdam following the death of George Floyd, and ‘#HOWAREYOUREALLYDOING’, a project in which ordinary Amsterdammers are asked to share their personal stories of life during the pandemic.

Refresh
Refresh Amsterdam is a biennial exhibition about Amsterdam city culture. In this first edition, Sense of Place, 25 artists express what Amsterdam means to them. Through paintings, visual art or illustrations, they tell us about some of the city’s less familiar features. The exhibition doesn’t pay tribute to the powerful, rich people in Amsterdam’s past who created the city’s historical heritage, instead it is an ode to contemporary heroes who have each in their own way contributed to the city. For this exhibition we translated several projects into English, including Abdelkader Benali’s essay “I Contain Multitudes” about the lives of people of migrant heritages living in Amsterdam. For us as language lovers, these are super interesting assignments.

Many cultural patrons communicate with their visitors and audiences in several languages. I work closely with the Vertaalcollectief on translations. Working with them feels like a partnership. They are sensitive to context, target groups, tone of voice, but also to the textual conventions certain sectors prefer. Their quality is high. They always meet their deadlines. The price is absolutely in proportion to their quality and professionalism.
