Summary

The lion’s share of writings on Kissinger focus on his political career, but this biography touches Kissinger’s life as a young man who fled to America with his Jewish family in the 1930’s after the Nazi’s came to power, and became a teacher of international politics at Harvard. Kissinger published serval books on the political consequences of nuclear warfare and America’s role during modern conflicts. His interests and involvement in international relations later brought him into American politics.

This biography is based on never before published documents from archives all over the world. The general image of Kissinger of a pragmatic and true politician should be revised according to Ferguson. He claims Kissinger was an idealist, even more so than he was an academic and a cold, power hungry politician.

The Idealist fills in episodes that were glossed over in Walter Isaacson’s 1992 biograph’

– The Guardian

‘The sheer quality of the material unearthed justifies the length and detail’

– New York Times

‘Ferguson’s work… provides a fascinating look at the social history of Kissinger’s German-Jewish background’

– Irish Times

‘Ferguson, who is Kissinger’s official biographer, is not just the dutiful chronicler of an extraordinarily long and varied life’

– Independent
